The story of the Moriarty ski hat begins in 1956, when Anabel Moriarty knitted a hat for her 17-year-old son Marvin to wear at the Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy. Marvin was the youngest man ever selected for the U.S. men's Olympic ski team, and the distinctive hat soon caught the attention of other skiers.
Back home in Stowe, Vermont, demand took off. Anabel began recruiting local knitters to keep up, turning a small family operation into a thriving business. By 1965, the Moriartys were producing some 40,000 hats a year.
After years out of production, the family revived the business in 2013. Today, Anabel's grandson Scott and his wife Jess carry on the tradition in Stowe.
Knit from 100% American wool yarn, these heavyweight beanies are made to stand up to cold Vermont winters. A soft fleece lining around the inside of the cuff provides extra warmth and comfort over the ears.
