Barn coats may be having a moment, but they’ve always been part of the landscape in New England. 

When we got our hands on this fabric from American Woolen, we knew we had to make something special with it. The fabric is constructed with a warp-faced weave, a technique that uses a dense arrangement of threads to create a unique look and a texture that echoes corduroy in the best way. At a hefty 21 ounces, this wool blend brings a natural warmth, with a hint of stretch for just enough ease.

This barn jacket inspired shirt coat features two lower dual entry pockets, an outer patch pocket at the left chest, a hidden internal patch pocket on the right sideand a grandad collar for a bit of old school cool.

Like our flagship flannel, Barnard is the pinnacle of New England craftsmanship. Milled by American Woolen in Stafford Springs, CT and sewn by New England Shirt Co. in Fall River, MA. Hundreds of years of history and textile expertise go into this garment.

Details

Two lower dual-entry pockets for gizmo storage as well as a place to put your hands when you awkwardly don’t know what to do with them.

Outer patch pocket at left chest, hidden internal patch pocket on the right side to keep your cards close to your chest.

Grandad collar for a little old-school cool (thanks to “Grandad” Warren for the inspo).

Double-needle stitching throughout.

Standard fit, with a bit of extra room for layering. Take your normal size.

I did not want to love this coat because it was made of wool and I wasn’t sure I wanted to deal with the care that comes with wool, but I kept finding myself coming back to the website looking at it again and again. It’s called a work jacket, but I think you could also refer to it as a chore jacket and what I really love is the simplicity of the design and the color of this woven wool fabric. So as you can tell, I bought it, it fits comfortably, it hangs great on the body, and it has a substantial looking, feel without being too much., when you feel the wool of this jacket, you realize that the designer put a lot of thought into the fabric and how to make it into a beautiful jacket. I can see wearing this jacket with jeans as well as chinos. I haven’t seen a coat like this, it is well worth adding to my closet. As a matter of fact, this jacket alone made me come back to the website and order several other items to add to my clothing collection.
